paul strand - abstract photography
Born 1890 in New York city, Paul Strand is considered an influential photographer and an early icon of the 'straight photography' school. When he was 17 he began to study photography with Lewis Hine, who was later noted on his photographs of industrial workers and immigrants.
Strands work influenced the emphasis in sharply focused objective images in the 20th century. alot of his abstract pieces worked with shadows and straight lines in architecture and sculptures. |
Strands work was also related to pure photography, which is defined as 'having sylistic traits that are not manipulated heavily to mimic other art forms such as painting.' Strand was a modernist and was highly influenced by Alfred Stieglitz and Charles Sheeler.
In 1915 Strand began workng with large format cameras (then referred to as 'straight photography'). He combined elements of abstraction and reality in his compositions, creating his own personal style. Heavily influenced by Stieglitz and Sheeler, most of his subject matter ranged from architectural pictures, portraits and still life studies. |
